Chapter Six

Christmas Eve

Evening

L

etty had no sooner settled into a comfortable position on one of the drawing room sofas when her mother asked for a favor.

“Lettice, I need you to go up to the attics.”

She frowned and glanced up from the book she’d been attempting to read for the last hour, but thoughts of the kiss she’d shared with Courtland kept interrupting. “Whatever for?”

Her mother’s embroidery needle never slowed. “There is a box of silver bells up there somewhere.” She grinned, and her hand paused at her task. “The box itself is lovely. Bound in royal blue linen and stamped with your father’s crest. It was a gift upon our wedding day all those years ago.”

“I remember it.” That box had always been treated with the utmost care, for it had been given to her parents by the king himself. Such were the things garnered when one was a duke. “You absolutely need them right now?”

“Of course.” She dropped her gaze to her handiwork. “I simply can’t have Christmas or my anniversary without them. Knowing I’d forgotten to retrieve them is tantamount to a sin.”

The rest of her family that had gathered in the drawing looked at Letty, who frowned.

“You’ve come this far through the holiday season and they’ve still been in storage. Why not leave them there?”

A faint blush stained her mother’s cheeks. “I’m loath to admit this, but I only just remembered them since the house party has been so busy, but we’ve had them every year since your father and I have been married.” She laid her embroidery in her lap. “I simply must have them.”

“It’s late. Why can’t one of the boys go up?” She didn’t understand why it was an issue right in this moment.

“I need the boys for other things this evening.”

“For what?”

“Nothing you need concern yourself with,” her mother replied with a mysterious expression that had both Griffin and Stephen snickering. “Besides, you’ve a more delicate touch. The boys will go through the things up there with a heavy hand and possibly break something.”

“Argh!” Letty huffed in frustration. In retrospect, doing the errand was such a simple thing, but she was comfortable, and her ankle was still tender. “Are you quite certain you still have them? I don’t want to make my way up there only to find they’ve been lost to the ages.”

“I am.” Her mother flashed a smile as innocent as the Madonna’s. “Alberts always supervises their placement in the attics at the end of Twelfth Night.”

“Then let him retrieve them. He can go directly to them in a twinkling.” Honestly, going into the attics was an inconvenience. After being kissed by Courtland earlier, she wished to think about that moment and how it had made her feel, perhaps relive it, and none of that would happen in the drafty, dark attics of Ivy Castle.

Quite frankly that kiss had blown the dust from her heart, rapped upon its cold shell, and had started it beating again. But why? Hadn’t she already found—and lost—her one true love?

“Lettice, I’m asking you to please retrieve that box of bells.
